Can you work at 14 in California?

In California, you can start most non-farm jobs at 14. You need a work permit until you turn 18 (from school (school district or charter authority)). At 14 and 15 you can work up to 3 h on a school day, 18 h in a school week, 40 h in a summer week. 16- and 17-year-olds also have hour limits.

After a job offer, get the 'Statement of Intent to Employ a Minor and Request for a Work Permit' (form B1-1) from the school, have the employer and a parent/guardian complete and sign it, and return it to the school, which issues the 'Permit to Employ and Work' (B1-4) to the employer. Outside school hours only. Work-experience (WEE) students may work during school hours, up to 23 hours a week. School in session: 4 hours on a school day (8 on a non-school day or a school day before a non-school day), 48 hours a week. School not in session: 8 hours a day, 48 a week. DOL table (as of 2025-07-15) lists '3-18 school day/week' for 16–17; the California Labor Commissioner's summary chart (Labor Code 1391) says 4 hours/school day and 48 hours/week; used the state chart.

Breaks: No minor-specific rule; California's general rule applies: a 30-minute meal period for work periods over 5 hours (waivable by mutual consent if the day is no more than 6 hours).
